BLAZE DRIVES FAMILY FROM THEIR HOMES

BLAZE DRIVES FAMILIES FROM THEIR HOMES
(Saturday Telegraph March 25th 2011) By: Clementine Cuneo. (Police Reporter).
More than 1000 people were forced from their homes at dawn as a water treatment plant caught fire – spilling 1000 litres of hydrogen peroxide into nearby wetlands.
The blaze at the Kurnell factory about 6am yesterday was quickly brought under control but caused a highly corrosive chemical run-off.
Residents were not allowed home until late afternoon as crews tried to contain the spill, while toxic fumes also posed a threat.
It’s gone from a fire to a HAZMAT incident...and there are wetlands right beside the building. The fumes are full of gas and plastic...fortunately the wind is blowing it all out to sea. If that changes, we’ll have real problems, fire brigade spokesman Inspector Glen Morgan said.
A workman inside the Integra factory on Cook Road said he heard ‘popping sounds ‘ and then saw leaping flames. The clean-up will continue today.
