CHESHER UNDER PRESSURE
(Saturday Telegraph 2nd April 2011) By: Lisa Davies.
As he buckled under the strain of political life, one-time political adviser Matthew Chesher turned to illegal drugs but he was soon caught red-handed buying a single ecstasy tablet from a dealer who was being watched by police.
In Downing Centre Local Court yesterday, the husband of former education minister Verity Firth admitted he had spent $350 on drugs prior to the $30 he paid on January 28 before his arrest, just metres from his Pyrmont home.
Barrister Matthew Johnston told the court Chesher had battled a depressive anxiety disorder using drugs (to cope) Mr Johnston said.
In a reference tendered to court, former state treasurer Michael Egan said Chesher’s conduct was completely out of character for a man who had given years of exemplary service to government.
He is, in my view, as close to a model citizen as it is possible to be, Mr Egan said.
Magistrate Anthony Townsden put Chesher on a 12-month good behaviour bond.
